checking the suspensionAs cars improve and become more sophisticated new mechanisms are added with more efficient components. Like the tires, engine and brakes the suspension too provides an important roll, adjusting to what the road throws at you to provide stability whilst driving. The following article explains how to check your suspension for faults that could be lurking.

• The Push Test is one of simplest preliminary tests you can perform. All you need to do push down hard on each corner of the car’s body. The car should travel straight back up not too high and then return to its original position. If it travels up too high and sinks down to soon the absorbers will probably need replacing due to wear and tear. This test isn’t supposed to be a thorough evaluation just a quick spot check.

• Another obvious way to spot a problem is if the car Bounces Excessively. If whilst driving the car leans too far to the side then you may have a problem. It should be easy to notice whilst turning corners. This often caused by a leak of suspension fluid or worn shock absorbers. If this is the case all you need to do is simply replace the worn parts. Make sure you get a second opinion from a professional before replacing parts yourself. It’s important to make sure your suspension is working properly regularly or you may loose control whilst driving.

If you can hear a loud clunking noise it could be caused by the layer of grease used to seal the strut caps. If a thin layer of grease has been applied you may need a thicker, better quality grease. To see if this is the case you need to remove the suspension and check the grease covering. If thin grease has been applied then remove it from the parts and replace it with thick sealing grease. This may take some time but the difference should be noticeable immediately. If this isn't the problem then it could be caused by the fluid levels running low. All you need to do is check the levels and if they are low then replace them. If they are still low there could be a leak in the system. If this is the case you should have your suspension checked at a garage.
